From SsangYong Rexton to SssangYong Musso, SsangYong cars are always one of the main choices for SUV lovers. It’s big and it’s cheap to buy!

SsangYong (쌍용자동차) was originally founded in 1954 in South Korea. SsangYong means double dragons in Korean. The company built many significant cars throughout the decades and today it is the fourth largest Korean automaker.

During 1960s, SsangYong built several Jeeps, trucks, and buses for the US Army. It was not really famous in selling cars to public until 1990s, the company started a technology partnership with Daimler AG (company that build Maybach, Mercedes-Benz, and Smart car).

The partnership allow us to see the birth of SsangYong Chairman H which based on the Mercedes-Benz W124, SsangYong Istana, SsangYong Kallista (rebadged Panther Kallista), SsangYong Family (based on Isuzu Trooper), SsangYong Musso, and SsangYong Korando in the 1990s.

SsangYong significant models

  • SsangYong Rexton (2001 – present) – SsangYong Rexton is one of the most famous SsangYong cars in the market. This SsangYong SUV is based on Mercedes-Benz M-Class. SsangYong Rexton was replaced by SsangYong Rexton II in 2006.
  • SsangYong Musso – SsangYong Musso is another SsangYong SUV that received the Auto Design Award in 1994 and 1996.
  • SsangYong Actyon – Model available for sale: SsangYong Actyon (Coupe Sports) and SsangYong Actyon Sports (SUT).
  • SsangYong Rodius – SsangYong Rodius is a large MPV built and sold by SsangYong Motor Company. SsangYong Rodius also known as the SsangYong Stavic. You can download SsangYong Rodius owners manual for free here.
  • SsangYong Kyron – For some reasons, SsangYong Kyron is famous in Sri Lanka (It is known as Mirco Kyron in Sri Lanka).

There are many SsangYong cars have been built over five decades since day one. Other than the listed SsangYong models above, there are some other significant SsangYong cars like SsangYong Musso Sports and SsangYong Chairman W.

In 2009, SsangYong recorded over $75 million loss and the company is expected to be acquired by an Indian company Mahindra & Mahindra Limited. With the experience of Mahindra & Mahindra Limited being an automobile manufacturer, we believe we will see some new SsangYong cars for sale in 2011 and future.
