Malaysia is headed into the Guinness Book of World Records for cramming 21 people into a Mini Cooper. Students from Inti College Subang Jaya not only battled the rain in their bid to successfully fit 21 people for 20 seconds into a 1999 Mini Cooper, they also had to do it twice.
Organising chairman Jasween Kaur Maan said the first attempt was completed outdoors in four minutes just as the rain started to pour and the team of students had to repeat the feat later because RTM’s television crew turned up late.

RECORD SQUEEZE: It’s definitely not the usual way to get into a car. But anything goes when you are trying to set a new world record. Nineteen-year-old Soong Vic Kie was the last person to be squeezed into this Mini Cooper. – Starpic by BRIAN MOH.

“We had already beaten the previous record set by 18 women in Britain in 2000. But we had to do it again for the TV cameras,” she said, adding that they only had two prior rehearsals as they only received the car on Friday.

Jasween, 20, said the criteria was that everyone was over 1.5m tall and 18 years old and above.

“The students’ size ranged from the very skinny to average sized,” she said, adding that the attempt was fully endorsed by the Guinness Book of World Records.

“They (Guinness) were unable to send a representative and so they requested for video evidence of the attempt. Once they receive that, we will be in the book,” she said.

However, the college was immediately given a certificate by the Malaysian Book of Records which had sent a representative.

Jasween said the college had not planned to break a record when it first mooted the idea.

“We just thought of having a stunt to pull the crowd to our annual charity event but it turned out to be something much better,” she said.

Jasween said the team was thoroughly excited over scoring the world record, and few had complaints about how uncomfortable they had been for those 20 seconds.

Previous record
According to the Guiness Book of World Records, the record for the greatest number of people to fit in a Mini was achieved on July 3, 2000, when 18 women crammed into a Mini Cooper outside the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham, West Midlands, Britain. This team beat the previous record, set by the Reading Ladies’ Rugby Club of Britain by one person.
