HI there guys,

I am having some problems with the thing that is connected to the fuel tank. It is a silver color electronic device which gives out a whizzing sound everytime i turn the car to "ON". If the whizzing sound is not there, the car won`t start. I have to give it a tap or two using my finger or the back of a screwdriver and then the whizzing sound appears and the starts normally. However, when i drive, it seems like the engine is not getting enough fuel as my car just dies and i have to go to the back again and give that thing a tap or two then its back to normal.

My question is, what is that thing called and how much to replace it. Sorry for not posting the picture guys but please help me out here. Thanks a lot....

1. Are you running on injection engine or carburettor engine?
2. According to picture below, which part of the "thing" you mention?

Ooopss, forgot bout the engine specs...sorry..im running a 1.3 L fuel injected auto transmission...from the pieces above, i think that the thing that i am referring to is the part next to number 23...that is the closest as to what i am mentioning..thank you.

it may due to the electric connection, try to use some sand paper to clean it up and see..

Killaej6,

Senders and sensors in the SPi engine is sensitive. It may very well be a loose earth connection giving you this problem. Check your connections and connectors. Crazymini is right to reccommend sanding off the corrosion on the terminals.

The part that you have indicated is actually the fuel sender assembly(float unit and lock). This tells how much fuel you have in the tank. If that dies, there is no reading on your fuel gauge only, it won't stall your engine. However, making a calculated guess here, you may have a failing fuel pump. The whizzing sound you hear is the pump working. Check your fuel pump power supply. It is located ontop of your fuel tank next to a one way valve assembly. It is a round plate secured into the tank with about 8 screws, there are 2 terminals that come out. Or it could just be a failing connection.

The only way to access your fuel pump is to take out your fuel tank because the pump location is sited on the flat surface just infront of part 30.(refer to pix posted by Maven) The pictures posted are from carb based fuel tanks(5 gal, 7 gal and van tanks) not the later injection fuel tank. There are differences between tanks.

PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU DISCONNECT THE BATTERY BEFORE DOING ANYTHING WITH THE FUEL TANK

Check that first. Connectors are cheap to fix but a replacement Fuel Injection pump can be costly.

Good luck.

Cheers
