Mams,
jjoeworks is right, there is a stamping on the body of the carb to differenciate a 40 and a 45.
Function of both is more or less similar. There is not much performance difference between the two. You will only see the difference when you open up and see the internals or when it is in use. On 45s and 48s uses a single taper point screw with a securing plate linking the two screws and bent tabs for a locking arrangement. The DCOE 40s on the other hand have blade spring location on both the auxiliary venturi and the choke. Both are held in position by the trumpet and its two retaining clamps. That is actually the only visible difference between the 45s,48s and 40s. Tuning wise, the 45s and 48s offer more flexibility than the 40s.
However, a well tuned SU HIF44 or HS6 will offer the same amount of performance as a Weber. The only difference is that the Weber will have more top speed whereas the SU will provide more low and mid range power. It depends on what you want out of your Mini.
Visual wise, a Weber will always spell 'performance' Mini, whereas an SU will still say 'run of the mill' Mini.
Cheers
